A COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE

Field notes for forward‑deployed engineers.

Forward Deployed Engineers operate at the intersection of engineering, product, and customer success — translating ambiguous problems into shipped software in unfamiliar environments. This is a private community for practitioners: a place to develop the craft, prepare for interviews, and exchange candid advice with peers who have already solved what you're working on.

Deploying AI in customer environments across the world
P.01

Learning

A working library: postmortems on real deployments, prompt patterns that survived contact with customers, evals you can copy, and the boring infra glue nobody writes about.

Interviews

Hear from fellow FDEs about the challenges they face. Customer studies that deliver value and benchmarks to help you be more effective.

Advice

A private Slack with senior FDEs on the other side. Scope creep, demo politics, the “customer wants a chatbot but needs a workflow” problem — get a real answer in an hour, not a year.

Slack · Office hours · 1:1s
My first six months as an FDE, I would have paid five figures for a Slack channel of people who'd already done it. This is that channel.

02 · What's inside

A working dossier for the job — not another newsletter you'll archive.

i.
Learning

The Field Notebook

A growing library of deployment postmortems written by people who shipped the thing. Searchable by industry, model, and failure mode. No vendor pitches.

ii.
Learning

Weekly Teardowns

One member walks the room through a real engagement — what they scoped, what broke, what they'd undo. Recorded, transcribed, fully off the record.

iii.
Interviews

Mock Loops

Live, video, with fellow FDEs who've recently been through the same loops at the labs you're applying to. Customer‑sim, take‑home review, and the dreaded systems round — feedback from people who know exactly what the bar looks like.

iv.
Interviews

Comp & Leveling Sheet

Anonymous, member‑maintained. Bands by company, level, and equity vesting style. Updated quarterly. Visible only to members who contribute.

Office Hours

Two senior FDEs hold open hours every week — drop in with a screenshot, a customer email, or a Loom. Walk out with a next step.

06 · FAQ

Honest answers to the questions we keep getting.

Who is this actually for? +
Engineers whose job description includes flying somewhere, sitting next to a customer, and shipping something that mostly works by Friday. That's FDEs at frontier labs, solutions engineers at AI infra startups, founding engineers at vertical AI companies, and people from a software background who want to move into the role.
How is this different from a paid newsletter or Discord? +
A newsletter is one‑to‑many. We're many‑to‑many, with the people writing those newsletters as members. The interview prep and career triage pieces don't really exist anywhere else for this role.
What does it cost? +
Founding cohort is free in exchange for contributing a teardown or library entry within the first quarter. After that we'll likely settle around mid‑three‑figures per year, with comped seats for people early in their career.
Is anything I share inside this group going to leak? +
Chatham House rule, enforced. Every member is vetted by two existing members. Library entries are anonymized by default and reviewed before publishing. We'd rather grow slowly than break trust.
Do you place people in jobs? +
No — we're not a recruiter and we don't take fees. But warm intros happen organically between members all the time, and we maintain an opt‑in list of companies hiring FDEs this quarter.
